Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has imposed a total fine of EGP 20.65m on mobile phone operators working in the local market for violating the regulatory rules of the mobile number portability, a service that allows users to keep their phone numbers when switching service providers.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, it was decided in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 10 of 2003 to fine Vodafone EGP 7m, Orange EGP 5.8m, Etisalat EGP 3.95m, and WE EGP 3.9m.

The violations included unjustified rejections of number porting requests, failure to respond to such requests within 24 hours from the date of the request, and inability to activate the transferred number on the new network.
