Egypt signed an agreement with The World Health Organization to help establish a comprehensive health insurance system in Egypt.

The WHO will offer recommendations based on international standards and experience that will help Egypt upgrade its system.

The government had already started the upgrade since 2019, it applied its new systems in Port Said and Luxor, and now it is expanding to Ismailia. The first phase will also include South Sinai, Aswan and Suez, then expand to Qena, Red Sea and Matrouh.

A comprehensive health insurance system became even higher on the list of prioirties after the break out of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Egypt securing the vaccine for its citizens and producing vaccine locally were big milestones for the Egyptian health system.

The goal is for the new system to cover all of Egypt, alleviating the burden of costs of health services from above citizens. The new system has to be strong in the face of global crisis and financial instability.
