A press advocacy group is calling on Egypt's new prime minister to secure the release of two detained Egyptian bloggers and launch a transparent investigation into recent attacks on journalists covering protests.

The Committee to Protect Journalists urged Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri to use his new powers to free bloggers Alaa Abdel-Fattah and Maikel Nabil Sanad.

The New York-based group said in an open letter Monday that there were also at least 35 attacks on journalists late last month during clashes between protesters and security forces that left more than 40 people dead.

The group says at least two journalists were shot with rubber bullets in the eye, and that one remains in intensive care with the bullet still lodged in his brain.
