Egypt is set to inaugurate one of the biggest wind farms in the world by next week. The farm is in Gabal El-Zeit area which is located in the Red Sea governorate.

The farm is set to be the biggest in area with 300 turbines and an overall capacity of 580MW. The project started in 2015 and has a cost of about $625 millions.

The farm has several phases, the first of which is operational with 120 turbines connected to the national electricity grid and produces 240MW of electricity.

Phase 2 includes 110 turbines and capacity of 220MW then phase 3 with 60 turbines and 120MW capacity.

The areas was chosen for it's wind speed with average 12 meters per second and a record of 33 meters per second.

Precautions have been taken also to protect the 37 different species of birds that migrate through this route in spring and autumn where mills sense birds and stop operation with limited effect on energy production.

Egypt aims to have 20% energy from renewable sources by 2022 and to increase that to 42% by 2042.

Other projects like Dabaa nuclear plant in cooperation with Russia, The Benban Solar Park in Aswaan, and the Gulf Of Suez Wind Park in cooperation with Germany are set to keep Egypt on track of its energy plans.
